These canal markers were the outcome of a Heritage Learning Residency in Kirkintilloch. Three major foundries were found there, the Star, Basin and Lion foundries and the markers denote the site of each. They are made up of the tools used in the casting trade. Puffers which plied their trade on the west coast and Scottish Islands were also build there and launched in to the canal. Some of the names of the vessels built there form the base to the puffer sculpture. The fifth piece marks the site of the Unique Bridge which was a feat of engineering in its day. The canal went over a railway which went over a river and the plaque which is cast iron was made at the last existing founders in Kirkintilloch.
